The National Museum of St. Matthew is the most important collections of paintings and sculpture in Pisa, located in the square of San Matteo in Soarta.

Set in medieval convent of San Matteo, overlooking the Arno with a stylish statement in the Pisan Romanesque style and a facade (which is the entrance) classical. It has a complete set of works by major masters of Pisa and Tuscany in general from the twelfth to the seventeenth century, as well as archaeological and ceramic. The number and relevance of the works are kept here in the San Matteo, site of perhaps less well known as it deserves, one of the most important museums of Europe in the field of medieval art. In particular, the extraordinary collection of paintings from the Pisa area of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The value of these works brings more to the art-historical studies acknowledge that Pisa was the most Italian school of painting up at the turn of the thirteenth century.
